Herbs for Flu Season

With the rise of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens, maintaining a strong, resilient immune system is more important than ever. Research shows that lifestyle factors such as nutrition, physical activity, sleep quality, and stress management play a significant role in supporting immune function (Calder et al., 2020; Nieman & Wentz, 2019).

A balanced, nutrient-dense diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains provides essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help regulate the immune response. Diets high in added sugars, alcohol, and ultra-processed foods have been associated with increased inflammation and impaired immune defense, so reducing intake of these foods may support overall immune health (Christ et al., 2021).

When we can’t get the vitamins and minerals from our diets, a high-quality multivitamin that includes vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc may help meet basic nutritional needs. These micronutrients are known to contribute to normal immune system function, and deficiencies in them have been linked to increased susceptibility to infection (Gombart, Pierre, & Maggini, 2020).

Regular moderate exercise also supports immune regulation. Even low-impact activities, such as a 20-minute daily walk, can be beneficial. Public health guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week for optimal health and immune resilience (WHO, 2020).

Several herbs traditionally used in wellness practices — including elderberry (Sambucus nigra), echinacea, oregano, thyme, mullein, ginger, and garlic — have demonstrated antioxidant, antimicrobial, or anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory and preliminary clinical studies (Hawkins et al., 2019; Rondanelli et al., 2018). These herbs can be enjoyed as teas, infused in honey, or taken as tinctures as part of a general wellness routine, alongside a healthy lifestyle and diet. Adding lemon may provide additional benefits and easier absorption.

Our formulas incorporate local, raw honey and carefully selected organic herbs, prepared as teas or tinctures for convenient, natural immune support as part of a balanced wellness plan.
